The chair at Someone’s desk was empty. His entire office was empty. Stewart wasn’t supposed to be on this floor, but he had wanted to pass by just for a glimpse. It was 2:37 pm. Someone should have been back from lunch by now and seated directly in his chair, working on reports—that is, if the tracker Stewart had placed on CAR and the surveillance footage he’d hacked into from this department of Jack Pine was worth anything. Between both datasets, Someone’s patterns had been very consistent over the past two weeks. On some days, Stewart had even stopped by in person to make sure everything was accurate. Well, not stopped, but walked past, just as he’d done today. He’d try not to let his eyes linger too long. He’d try not to slow down his gait even a fraction of a step per minute. He’d try to act normal, as if Someone’s office was just one more room he had to pass on the way to somewhere else, but he knew full well that wasn’t true. He was going out of his way, but it was worth it. He got a high from the thrill of being so near. Of knowing that they were both in the same building, breathing the same air. But this time, the man wasn’t there at all.
